The madams, Ada and Minna Everleigh, were sisters whose shifting identities had them as traveling actors, Edgar Alan Poe's relatives, Kentucky debutantes fleeing violent husbands, and daughters of a once-wealthy Virginia lawyer crushed by the Civil War.
